Restoring problem teeth with natural-looking dental crowns

Our teeth go through a lot of wear-and-tear throughout our lives. Damage can come about as a result of dental decay or through an accident that cracks off a bit of the tooth. While made of the toughest substance in the human body, teeth are still susceptible to breakage. The good news is that there are long-lasting options for repairing noticeable damage and preventing the issue from escalating further. We can fully restore any teeth in need of repair using crowns.

What are dental crowns?

Crowns are full restorations that fully replace the visible part of the tooth. Made from either porcelain, ceramic, zirconia or gold, they fit over a prepared post and are then secured to your natural tooth, restoring the tooth to full functionality. Natural-looking crowns are colour-matched and accurately crafted to resemble the real article as close as possible.

Crowns can also be used to replace missing teeth in combination with implants.

Why do I need a crown?

The worst thing you can do to a damaged tooth is leave it. Teeth can easily become infected if bacteria can enter the internal structure of the tooth, causing tooth pain and eventual tooth loss. Replacing a lost tooth is a much more involved and expensive process than restoring a damaged tooth.

In cases where the damage is too extensive for a filling to remedy, crowns are the best solution. Crowns fully restore the tooth once we’ve removed the decayed and damaged parts of your poor tooth. With our inhouse milling unit, we can repair teeth in a single day with custom-made crowns. You need not go long without a complete smile.

How do we restore teeth with crowns at TwentyOneDental?

If you need to have a tooth repaired, we can restore your smile in a single day thanks to our digital dental technology and inhouse dental laboratory.

Preparing your tooth for repair

For your crown to fit perfectly in your smile, we will need to first remove the outer structure of your natural crown. We have to remove some of the healthy tooth as well as the parts of the tooth that are decayed and damaged. The result is a post that will function as the core of your new crown. We use local anaesthetic while we prepare the tooth and can offer sedation if you are nervous about undergoing any dental treatment.

Using Digital Smile Design to complete your smile

We use intraoral 3D cameras to capture digital scans which are then used to create accurate and life-like crowns in our dental laboratory. Once your tooth has been prepared, we scan the post as well as the rest of your smile so we can design a crown that blends seamlessly with the rest of your teeth. We can show you every step of the process on our digital display at the chair-side.

Treated, designed, crafted and fitted in a single day

With our digital dental laboratory in the clinic, we can make your crowns under the same roof on the same day. Our milling unit uses digital software to create your custom-made crown using the digital scans of your prepared tooth. Once the crown has been milled, we then colour the crown so it matches your natural teeth and polish it off. We then invite you back into the surgery and we will fit your new crown, completing your smile.

FAQs

How long do dental crowns last?

Crowns can last for decades if they are properly looked after. While the crown itself is resistant to decay decay, the natural tooth supporting it isn’t. Maintaining good oral hygiene and visiting the dentist regularly will make sure your crown has the best chance of lasting as long as it can.

My crown has cracked, can you replace it?

Yes. We can replace any broken crowns. If you had the crown fitted at our practice, we will be able to create a replacement for you in our laboratory before you arrive and will then replace and fit in a short appointment.

What is the best dental crown material?

Each type of crown comes with its pros and cons. Our most popular type of crown are ceramic crowns, made in a single day at our own dental laboratory. While zirconia crowns are more durable than ceramic, they are also more costly and will need to be made at a partner dental laboratory. Similarly with gold crowns, we don’t have the equipment in our surgery to make them so the treatment takes much longer than with our same-day cerec crowns.

My dentist used a crown to repair my tooth after root canal treatment, is this normal?

Yes. While fillings are the norm, a crown may be necessary if your tooth is badly damaged. Having a crown in place of a filling ensures that there is no visible damage or discolouration left by the infection.
