We understand how distressing tooth loss can be, especially if missing teeth are noticeable. Not only does it have a lasting impact on self-confidence, missing teeth also impact your general oral health. It’s important to replace missing teeth to return your mouth to full functionality and combat negative effects gaps have on your smile.

Tooth loss is a natural part of life. It can happen for many different reasons but the most common is due to age. If you’ve been living with gaps in your smile for a while and having visited the dentist due to nerves, we assure you we will provide a relaxing and comforting experience.

What are dentures?

A denture is a removable prosthesis used to replace missing teeth. Commonly referred to as ‘false teeth’, a denture is usually made of acrylic or a combination of acrylic and metal. A good set of dentures helps you to eat, speak, function, and often improves a person’s appearance.

Partial dentures

In cases where a few teeth are missing from either the top or bottom row, we can use partial dentures to complete your smile. Partial dentures use both the shape of your jaw and your existing teeth to support the false teeth.

Complete dentures

For patients who have lost all teeth, complete dentures use an acrylic plate that is moulded perfectly to the shape of your gums and jaw. This plate supports the replacement teeth and fits snugly in place. Denture adhesive can be used in combination to make sure the dentures remain in place and don’t become dislodged.

Implant-retained dentures

For a more secure solution, we can place implants to support your dentures. Once the implants are in place and secured, we adjust your implants, removing the solid plate, and affix the dentures to the implants.

How do we make custom-made dentures at TwentyOneDental?

Having dentures made after spending a long period of time with gaps in your smile can be life-changing. The difference a full smile makes on confidence is astounding and we would love to help you feel this boost in self-esteem.

Taking digital scans of your mouth shape

Whether you’re having partial or complete dentures, we will need to take scans of your mouth so we can craft your custom-made dentures with utter precision. We use an intraoral 3D camera to capture images and accurate measurements of your mouth, gums and teeth. These scans replace the need to use moulds and models. The camera is a lot less invasive and you can see everything that we see on the display.

Expert dental technicians at your service

Our dental technicians are trained in making prosthetics using the best tools for the job. We make your dentures on site, using our cutting edge digital laboratory. We also have a fast-track service to ensure you have your dentures made as quickly as possible.

Looking after your dentures at home

Once we fit your dentures and make sure that they are comfortable, we will talk through how to look after them at home and away. Our team will provide you with a care kit to get you started on how to properly keep your dentures in good shape throughout their use. It will take a few days to get used to them once you have them fitted, but once they have settled, you’ll make a start on enjoying a full set of functional teeth.

FAQs

Can dentures be fitted to receding gums?

Yes. After tooth loss, the mouth shape changes over time. Without the tooth roots present, the jaw bone gradually shrinks away and the gums recede back. If your dentures start to become loose, we will need to adjust the plate to fit to the roof of your mouth or your bottom jaw.

If the loss of gum and bone becomes more noticeable, we may consider treatment to replenish and restore your facial structure using bone grafts and potentially implants.

How do I clean my dentures?

Dentures are cleaned separately if you have partial dentures. You will still need to clean your existing teeth if you have them. With your dentures, you will need to use a special cleaning solution to soak them overnight and will need to clean them as you would with your teeth.

If you have complete tooth loss, you will still need to clean your gums and mouth of bacteria. Using mouthwash will keep your gums clean.

Can I sleep with dentures?

While you can, we recommend that you remove your dentures every night to allow your gums to rest. You can then leave your dentures to soak overnight, keeping them in good shape and clean.

What should I expect when wearing dentures for the first time?

It will take a few days to fully adapt to having dentures. At first, your mouth will produce more saliva than usual before it becomes used to them. It’s a natural reaction to the presence of something in the mouth and the same happens with braces. You will also have a slight speech impediment but this too will go once your tongue becomes used to the changes in your mouth shape with the plate now on the roof of your mouth. Reading out loud and practicing talking will help you to adapt quicker.

It may feel a little uncomfortable at first but you will soon get used to the dentures. If discomfort persists, get in touch and we can make any necessary adjustments.

Can I eat and drink with dentures?

Dentures function just like natural teeth so yes, you can eat and drink just what you did before. It’s sensible to avoid eating any overly hard foods that could break the dentures.

Does dental insurance cover dentures?

Dentures are considered as treatment for edentuous patients as tooth loss does impact your health. Your dental insurance provider should cover the cost of your dentures however they will not cover implants.
